Preparing for Your Baby’s Baptism Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
If you’re anything like I was, getting your child baptized felt like a second part-time job. First came gathering all the paperwork. Then finding my own Baptism and Confirmation certificates. Then contacting my wife’s childhood parish—located in another state—to request copies of hers. Then came the paperwork for our Godparents.
Between work, family life, and everything else on the calendar, it honestly felt overwhelming. As much as I love being Catholic, I have to admit that some parishes could make this process much easier—especially considering Baptism is one of the most important moments in the life of a Catholic family.
Thankfully, once the paperwork is finished, the rest is easy. That’s why I wanted to create this quick resource. Instead of spending hours researching what to buy, here are the exact items we used for both of our children’s baptisms. Hopefully this saves you some time so you can spend less energy shopping—and more time preparing your heart for the sacrament.
A Quick Word from One Dad to Another
I baptized both of my children. Our daughter was four years old. Our son was just eight months old. I was born and raised Catholic, but like many people, I drifted away from my faith during my young adult years. I’m honestly a little embarrassed to admit that it took us four years before our daughter was baptized.
Maybe your story looks similar. Life gets busy. Schedules fill up. Sometimes we convince ourselves we’ll “get around to it.” If I could offer one piece of advice—not as someone who’s perfect, but as a Catholic husband and dad trying to grow closer to Christ one day at a time—it would simply be this:
Don’t wait. Just do it.

Catholic Baby Baptism Checklist
While every parish is a little different, these are the most common items you’ll want to have ready before the big day.
1. Baptismal Candle
Every Catholic baptism includes the lighting of a baptismal candle from the Paschal Candle—a beautiful reminder that Christ is the Light of the World.
Some churches provide one. Others ask families to bring their own. After looking through countless options, I actually preferred the smaller candles over the large decorative versions. They’re easier to carry during Mass, store afterward, and become a keepsake you’ll actually keep.

2. Holy Water Bottle
Many parishes allow families to take home holy water used during the celebration or fill bottles afterward.
Technically, you only need one bottle. But I actually recommend buying a small pack. When we baptized both of our children, we filled several bottles and gave a couple to each of our Godparents as a special keepsake. It ended up being one of my favorite unexpected parts of the day.

3. White Baptism Outfit
White symbolizes the new life your child receives in Christ and their cleansing from original sin. Finding a nice outfit doesn’t have to be expensive.

For Girls
Our daughter absolutely loved this dress.
In fact…she still asks if she can wear it.
One note: Amazon marks it as “Frequently Returned,” but most reviews mention sizing—not quality. Our daughter normally wears a 5T. We ordered the 4/5T size and it fit perfectly.
